I brought Scooter in to see if Kaley hurt her and that is when I found the cut on her throat. I cleaned the cut and it didn't seem to be to deep. It didn't even bleed that much. We decided to keep her in for awhile just to watch her and make sure she was okay. She refused to eat or drink for the rest of the night and most of the next day. By late Sunday night she started drinking a little water on her own so we thought she was getting better. We nursed her the rest of the week cutting up her food into little bites. She went back and forth that whole week not drinking or eating without us helping her.
Then Aug 16, she started drinking and eating all on her own. And she even made up for lost time by eating everything in site. We thought then she was much better and we were all
relieved because we were planning a trip to Fla. the next day. Daphanie, my
daughter was to stay at home because of work and also to keep an eye on things
and Scooter.
We left for Fla. Sunday. As soon as we arrived and got into our motel room
Daphanie called. She said something was wrong with Scooter. She said she had 'Ballooned' up to 3 times her normal size. At that time I had no clue as to what she could
mean. She explained that Scooter was still drinking and eating normally and even going to the bathroom ok, but that her size had tripled and that
when she touched her, Scooter felt weird.
I told her to just keep and eye on her and if anything else changed or happened, to call us.
When we arrived home Tuesday night and I saw Scooter, I could have never imagined what I was seeing. She HAD ballooned to 3 times her normal size and just to touch her was strange. We were all scared to touch her. She actually waddled, not walked. I slept beside her that night not knowing if this was her last night with us or not. The next day I took her to the Vet's office.
When I got there the Vet. had no clue as to what could be wrong with her. She asked another Vet that also worked there to come in and look at her. Between them both and my description of what had happened to her in the past week they diagnosed her as having AIR trapped in her body. Evidently when Kaley bit her throat she ruptured her trachea and made a small tear in it. The sore healed up faster than the tear in her trachea and thus air was leaking out into her body. They suggested WRAPPING her and they said when her trachea healed the air would dissipate into her body and she would return to normal. They didn't suggest operating because of Scooter being 16 years old. They said her trachea would heal on its own but it just takes a little longer because it is made of cartilage and not bone. I was elated knowing that she was going to be alright.
The Vet and the nurse started to wrap her with ace bandages and tape. As they started to put the wrap on her the nurse said, " Don't you just want to stick a pin in her and pop her?" The Vet said yes and turned around and got a needle. She put it in Scooter back and they started squeezing air out of her. The air came out just like it does with a FLOAT!!! You could ACTUALLY HEAR the air coming out of her body. The Vet got more needles and stuck them throughout her body and as they wrapped her they squeezed more air out. As they did this they all kept exclaiming they had NEVER seen anything like this before in their lives. They had never even heard of this ever happening. ALL of the Animal Hospital employees came in the room to look and to see and to HEAR, the "Deflating Dog". The Vet said" This is something they never trained me for in school." They didn't even know how to put it in their computer or know what to charge me for a Deflation...LOL They said that Scooter made Medical History!!!!!!!!!!
When we left Scooter was wrapped from head to toes like a mummy in ace bandages and tape. She still has a little air trapped in her body, but she is doing very well and has another appt with the Vet Monday. I have taken pictures of her before and after her DEFLATION which I will post on here Tuesday.
If ANYBODY has ever heard of or seen anything like this before please contact me. I have searched the www for anything like this and can't find a thing. We can't even find a medical term for this and neither can the Veterinarian's. My son is calling it "Air Itis" LOL
